If you feel like the spark has gone from your love life and your sex drive is declining, then worry not, you may have lost the frisky feelings you once had. But you are not on your own. It has been shown that both men and women are frequently not in the mood, and have lost interest in sex.
Although it is natural as men get older to have a reduction in libido or sex drive, it is also normal for a man to be engaging in sexual activities well into his late 60’s and even older!
Do you really have a problem?
But before we go any further, ask yourself why you are questioning your lack of sex drive. Is it because you have a problem, or that society is telling you that you have a problem? For many people, not having sex that often is not a problem and in fact they are happy being just like that. Do not be pressurised by society or other people into thinking you have a problem when you dont. If you have a low sex drive but are perfectly happy that way then there is no problem to solve.
Loss of libido can be brought on by certain medical conditions, due to depression or anxiety, smoking or diet, or even as a side effect of some medicines you may be taking, so it is always a wise move to visit your doctor as a first port of call. When you rule out the medical side then you can look at alternative remedies and cures. Here we present some steps you can take to put the lead back into your pencil.
Your penis might appear to have a mind of it’s own, but obviously it is harmonised with the rest of your body. If you keep your body healthy and well maintained it will consequently improve your sexual capabilities, appetite and, as a bonus, your attractiveness and self confidence.
° One of the reasons erections occur less frequently as we age is the older we are the more likely our arteries are to harden and clog up, this causes circulation problems and a penis cannot rise without a good supply of blood. Whatever age you are, cutting down on cholesterol and keeping your heart and arteries in good shape is the best thing you can do for your sex life.
° A number of supplements work in a variety of ways to boost sex drive. See supplements to increase sex drive or see below for more information on how they
° Quit smoking, it can cause high blood pressure and bad circulation, it will also lower your sperm count. Having a high sperm count acts as a trigger boosting sex drive.
° Use it or lose it, the more sex you have the more testosterone your body produces, which in turn will stimulate the desire to have more sex.
° The existence of human pheromones has only recently been confirmed and is still not fully understood. Both men and women secrete them but women are more susceptible, this could be due to the fact that women have a keener sense of smell. They are most receptive to pheromones when their smell is keenest, during ovulation. See pheromone colognes and body washes
Pheromones work on a lock and key principle, they have coded signals to attract a specific type of partner, and women usually prefer men whose immune genes are different from their own. This becomes complicated if a woman is on the pill, due to the changes it causes she will become more attracted to men with the same immune genes as her own.
Supplements taken to increase sex drive work in a number of ways:
° Some supplements are generally accepted to stimulate and strengthen erections. These include L-Arginine, Damiana, Muira Puama, Ginseng, and Ginkgo.
° Supplements reputed to increase your energy levels, physical, mental, and sexual. These are most effective when sex drive is low due to a busy and demanding life. These include, Guarana, Ginkgo, and Ginseng.
° There are supplements generally thought to increase production of sperm, acting as a trigger to sex drive. These includeCholine and Co-enzyme Q.
° Some supplements are believed to work by increasing blood flow to the penis having a direct effect on libido. These include L-Arginine, Damiana and Ginkgo.
° Supplements reasoned to work directly on brain chemicals stimulating neurotransmitters. These include L-Arginine, Damiana, Evening-Primrose, Muira Puama, and Ginseng.
° Supplements thought to stimulate desire by increasing hormone production such as testosterone, in the body. These include Maca, Muira-Puama, Evening-Primrose, Boron, Zinc, Phenylalanine and Tyrosine.
° Some supplements are believed to work by improving mood to increase sex drive. These include St Johns Wort and Valerian.
° Stress and over-work are the most common causes of a reduced sex drive. Avoid caffeine, cigarettes, alcohol and above all, try to relax and switch off.
° Poor diet; if you’re not getting enough vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids hormone imbalances may arise and have a big effect on your sex drive. See supplement section
° Familiarity; in long term relationships you become familiar with your partner’s body and the tried and tested techniques. Try varying the time and place of sex, experiment with different positions and techniques so your sex life doesn’t become stale.
° Lack of exercise will affect metabolism and hormone balance, increase your level of exercise and sustain it, it will take a month to see any benefit. Beware of over exercising as it can lower testosterone; don’t push yourself to extremes.
° Being overweight can cause sluggishness, low energy levels, a diminished libido and low self esteem. Consuming too many carbohydrates raises serotonin which will further lower your sex drive.
° Excessive alcohol consumption reduces testosterone production. Extreme long term abuse can cause impotence, shrunken testicles, penis size reduction and loss of pubic hair. Milk Thistle can help fight the poisoning effect of alcohol.
° Medication; some can affect your libido, ask your doctor about your prescription and how it may affect you, it may be possible to change the dose or switch to another drug if necessary.
° Male menopause; testosterone levels peak in your late 20s to early 30s, by the time you are 40 there will be a gradual decrease, about 1% a year initially. Men can even experience some of the symptoms women have in the menopause, hot flushes etc, unlike women it should be gradual.
Pheromones are used by animals to attract mates, science is yet to fully understand their use in human sexual chemistry, but research has shown they can play a part in sexual attraction (anyway it’s worth giving it a try)
Your natural pheromones are produced under your armpits and around your genitals, to enhance this you could not wash for awhile, or to avoid the risk of just being smelling try a pheromone cologne or body wash.
